Job Description

Title: Work Manager

Location: Reading

Salary: £35,000 - £45,000

This position will manage and lead a team of people in allocating workload and managing the day to day operations in the workshop. It requires the job holder to co-ordinate resources and liaise with internal and external key contacts to ensure work is delivered on time and to a quality standard.

Schedule and plan all labour and material requirements in a cost-effective way that meets quality specification and customer requirements. Improve the company's planning and delivery processes. Ensure that delivery of all projects runs smoothly.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for job allocation and job flow in the workshop and on site, including job scheduling and labour allocation for day to day operations;
  • co-ordinate resources, (operational and human) schedules and activities to effectively manage jobs;
  • monitor, review and evaluate progress of project, and material and labour costs;
  • assist with quoting, project management, materials purchasing and quality checks;
  • ensure correct job numbers are used and that time records are correct;
  • regularly report progress on each job and quickly communicate delays or concerns with the Director - Operations. Report on manpower overruns or shortfalls;
  • act as a technical adviser on key projects and other areas of the business as requested;
  • work with the Senior Management Team to respond to client's requests for updates on the status of their jobs and keep the communication channels open to ensure information is accurate;
  • receive and review feedback from customers and follow up to ensure customer satisfaction;
  • work with the Senior Management Team to investigate customer complaints and concerns arising from service and suggest appropriate solutions. Discuss with team to identify appropriate course of action;
  • identify staff that require on-going training and implement training opportunities to ensure their skills are improved;
  • provide feedback to staff that are not performing to the expected level and ensure Senior Management Team and human resources are informed of trends in performance;
  • promote a Health and Safety culture within the business;
  • provide Engineering Manager and Senior Management with regular progress updates and forecasts;
  • prepare reports about production processes for senior management and suggest ways to improve efficiency;
  • manage the administration team to ensure that Utilities have the correct administrative support and that administrative tasks are carried out effectively and efficiently


  • engineering experience, preferably NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering;
  • health & safety qualification such as IOSH Working / Managing Safely / CSCS or equivalent


  • knowledge and experience of project planning and management;
  • knowledge of computers and database/spreadsheet/word processing
