Senior Cryogenics Engineer

Abingdon

Salary negotiable DOE - £35-50k


Introduction

I'm looking to speak with people keen to pursue or continue their career within cryogenics and Ultra Low Temperature engineering with an industry leading organisation that has a reputation for delivering world first breakthroughs in the field of fabrication, analysis and manipulation of matter at an atomic scale.


The Job

As a senior member of the cryogenics engineering team, you will be responsible for ensuring that your allocated projects meet your customer's requirements, from concept design, through design validation and on to manufacture and testing. With almost all projects being for special purpose applications, you will be flexible and versatile in your thinking, with an ability to respond well to varied problem solving challenges.

You will expect to be responsible for the following wide ranging duties:

  • Generate an in-depth understanding of market applications
  • Produce concept designs to meet those applications
  • Generate specifications and concept costing
  • Identify technical and feasibility risks for designs and mitigations
  • Lead safety assessments of the design
  • Conduct verification testing or mathematical modelling to validate design concepts
  • Define product structure and performance increments required meet the specification
  • Produce detailed design guidance and on occasion generate designs
  • Develop Verification and Validation matrix and co-ordinate sub-assembly testing
  • Provide detailed build and test documentation for complex projects
  • Define test procedures and interpret the data from those tests
  • Ensure the design is compliant with applicable regulatory standards and ensure required elements are delivered to the project Technical File
  • Provide technical support for product and process improvements
  • Provide technical support in resolving customer issues
  • Support the technical development of suppliers
  • Maintain professional awareness of developments in relevant knowledge areas, competitors product and adjacent industries
  • Assess new designs against risk of infringing competitor patents and develop IP to protect the company's products
  • Propose new technology improvements for the Company road map
  • Lead technical aspects of product design improvements
  • Adhere to company Health and Safety policy at all times


The Candidate

Building on a strong academic background in a relevant field, you will most likely have either completed a Masters and spent 5 or more years in industry, or have operated in a post doctoral research capacity on applied aspects of cryogenic design, generating an in depth knowledge of Helium-3 and dilution refrigeration systems.

You will be able to demonstrate competence in many of the following areas, with the capacity to upskill in any areas that you currently lack:

  • Design and product specification development
  • FMEA / HAZOP analysis techniques and the development of risk registers
  • Cryogenic systems analysis
  • C#, Python or Java software development for data analysis and instrumentation control
  • Experimental verification and validation methods
  • Technical authorship and documentation for detailed new build and test guides for technicians
  • Product cost modelling, DFM and DFA
  • Design with an awareness of product reliability and ease of service
  • Project management experience
  • CAD experience
  • Mentorship and training of junior engineers
