This is a roaming role covering the North (Midlands, North West, Yorkshire) region of the UK. You will be responsible for managing a region of the landfill and aftercare function within Landfill Energy maximising contribution from the company's operational landfill sites and managing the long term costs and liabilities of the region's landfill sites in the aftercare phase whist ensuring compliance with health, safety and environmental obligations in both.
To manage a regional team looking after the region's landfill portfolio as follows:
Maximising the operating contribution from the operational landfill business whilst maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations. The business encompasses operational landfill sites, where appropriate landfill MRFs (Material Recycling Facilities), sludge and composting operations.
Managing the efficient transition of defined operational landfills through commercial closure into restoration and on to full aftercare status in line with planning and permitting obligations whilst defining and meeting appropriate Company standards and controlling cost against budgets.
To manage the LWAP (Landfill Wind-down and Aftercare Programme) to optimise waste inputs (through liaison with regional teams) into operational landfill sites to maximise revenue, minimise cost and to ultimately operate the defined sites for best economic closure.
To optimise costs throughout all phases of landfill through the use of key performance indicators (KPIs) and development of best practice working.
To develop close working relationships with the Power Generation team and Technical Support team to ensure that LFG volumes are optimised at all times and that the LFE Business operates as a cohesive team.
To manage and oversee team and individual performance and capability through appropriate management tools and company processes, to ensure team is technically competent.
To provide clear management to the team, developing a positive culture with an emphasis on personal development including the formation of a clear succession plan for all levels within the team.
To carry out annual and timely Performance Appraisal Reviews (PARs) of all direct reportees and ensure that PARs are carried out throughout the team.
Key job elements:
Ensure the landfill and aftercare function is, and remains, fully compliant with statutory, regulatory, legislative, BMS and corporate requirements.
To pursue the successful commercial/economic operation of the business to identify and incorporate new technologies into the business to maximise the existing asset base and reduce ongoing costs, e.g. land bank and new technologies.
To assist in the definition, development and maintenance of appropriate operational standards in line with best practice and industry benchmarks.
Assist in the development of functional KPIs to identify business optimisation / change. Including the monitoring and development of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPMs) and incorporation into Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for all mobile and fixed plant, particularly leachate treatment.
Liaison with internal business partners and support functions to ensure that the landfill and aftercare function continually delivers health, safety and environmental compliance.
Act as a representative of the Company as directed when liaising with contractors, customers, suppliers and the general public maintaining a professional and courteous approach at all times.
Proven knowledge of the landfill industry
Legislative and technical knowledge within the waste industry particularly related to landfill.
Knowledge of corporate financial systems and capital expenditure management.
Planned/periodic maintenance systems, e.g. CMMS
Understanding of the concept of landfill gas utilisation and management.
Extensive people management experience of a department/region at senior level.
Minimum of 3 years' experience of running a geographically dispersed team looking after the operation of landfill waste management facilities and the aftercare of closed landfill sites
A practical experience of liaising with regulators at all levels. Effecting change and balancing risk
Experience of leading and managing business change/transition
Operation of Leachate treatment plants
Strong management and leadership skills
