About the role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer to join the Landfill team, providing technical assistance on both open and closed sites with regards Environmental Control and Management.
You will assist in the assessment, design & build management, maintenance and improvement of environmental control systems & infrastructure on landfill sites and at the same time offer support on general landfill compliance issues and on the aftercare of closed landfills.
You will also be tasked with implementing management strategies and reviewing performance to maximise revenue and minimise costs associated with the management of the landfill sites and their environmental control and leachate systems.
You will also assist in the management of projects/contractors building infrastructure during operation and closure and manage contractors at sites where they are employed to control and manage environmental control and leachate systems.
Your main duties will include
Responsibilities include ensuring sites comply with their Permit conditions, and environmental and health and safety compliance is achieved. Ensuring environmental control and leachate systems are available, and that their performance is optimised and costs minimised.
Ensure projects and systems are installed within budget and on time.
Internal Customers include - Landfill sites and management teams, technical departments.
Responsibility for providing technical assistance in regards to the control of environmental control and leachate systems.
External Customers include - trade effluent undertakers to whom we discharge leachate produced from our landfills, land owners; the Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive. Report non-compliances and advise on best practice and third party contractors who work in partnership with.
Develop environmental control, leachate systems and solutions to optimise extraction, recirculation and maintain compliance, and deal with aftercare of closed landfalls.
Develop and manage routine performance assessment systems to include amongst other matters environmental control and for leachate management, extraction, treatment and disposal.
Checks and evaluates environmental and financial data to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations, permits and financial targets. Implements checking processes.
Develop processes to achieve compliance following reports any non-compliances to the Environment Agency.
Responsible for contractors during environmental control and leachate systems installations in ensuring that they are compliant to internal and external regulation with regards to the environment and health and safety.
About your Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
To be successful in your application for this role we require candidates to have a clear understanding of the landfill process. This should include landfill design and construction, waste input, waste degradation / methanogenesis, leachate production, capture and treatment.
Extensive experience within the industry is required, having worked on landfill management systems including infrastructure on the landfill itself and environmental control and leachate systems/ treatment plant and ability to manage contractors/suppliers.
You will be skilled in the assessment of data to establish performance characteristics and be able to develop and implement solutions to improve performance. You will be proficient in report writing and problem solving, formulating ideas to manage issues as they arise, and be able to undertake cost analysis and cost benefit assessments.
An relevant Engineering / Science / Geotechnical Degree is required, sufficient to cover the demands of the role with a good standard of English & Maths being considered essential.
