About the role:

Astute's Nuclear team is partnering with a nuclear services provider with a commitment to professional development and sustainability to recruit a Waste officer for its Reading site.

The Waste Officer position is an essential role to ensure waste regulations across the company are met and adhered to. The role comes with a salary of up to £39,000 a 9-day fortnight and other benefits.

Responsibilities and duties:
As the Waste Officer you will:
  • Follow compliance and environmental permits, by monitoring and maintaining the ideal levels of projection for the environment and the population.
  • You will be responsible for monitoring the removal of radioactive, controlled, and hazardous waste.
  • You will be identifying the key requirements of the client's environmental permit conditions to ensure violations are avoided.
  • You will use and maintain knowledge of radiological instruments and understand their purpose and limitations.
  • Understand and utilise assay sampling and waste sampling methodologies as well as disposal options, waste classification and container types.
  • Produce waste procedures appropriate for the separation, sentencing, packaging, and final disposal of all waste types.
  • Work with project teams, ensuring they are aware of waste process requirements and following regulations.
  • Be responsible for all resources required for waste processing activities.
  • Any other duties as required.
Professional qualifications:
We are looking for someone with the following:
  • NVQ Radiation Protection or City & Guilds - Radiation Safety Practices (essential)
  • Experience in health physics surveillance
  • Knowledge of Health & safety regulations including COSHH, PUWER, LOLER and RIDDOR.
  • Experience in compliance with radiological protection / IRR 99.
Personal skills:
The waste officer role would suit someone who is:
  • Organised and skilled in the utilisation of technical or scientific data.
  • Happy to take charge and train the project team in the waste process requirements.
  • Good communicator and willing to help across multiple teams.

  • Salary of up to £39,000
  • 9-day Fortnight (Every other Friday off!)
