We are working with RPOne powered by the Morson Group to support their client Rolls Royce SMR (small modular reactor) in the recruitment of a Containment Systems Design Lead to delivery a new fleet of small modular reactor power plants that will aid in the net zero carbon emissions globally. Reporting to the Reactor Systems Design Lead you will be responsible for technical and programme delivery of the Containment and Severe Accident Management System designs

The successful candidate will lead a small team of engineers to ensure the delivery of the containment system designs for the SMR programme. The role will involve developing system design concepts through gated design reviews, providing technical guidance and supervision to the design team, and engaging with external stakeholders and regulators on the nuclear system design

The Job
The Containment Systems Design Lead will have expertise in the application of systems engineering to the development of nuclear reactor systems and will lead the delivery of system designs into a fully integrated product solution in accordance with requirements flowed down from the project
Key duties will include…

  • Applying technical expertise to lead the design of system solutions from preliminary concept through to detailed design definition; this will include experience of trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
  • Building and managing a high performing team of engineers to deliver the design of the containment and accident management systems.
  • Developing, implementing and improving the ways of working, including tools, processes and culture.

· Defining and managing engineering requirements on reactor plant components, installations, controls and instrumentation.
· Developing robust plans for the assigned systems design team. Prioritise team activities to ensure on time delivery, cost and quality for all project deliverables.
· Understanding and articulating design and programme risks, managing them as appropriate with the Reactor Systems Design Manager.
· Ensure quality is maintained throughout the design process by undertaking local technical reviews and governance. Provide inputs to the main project technical review gates.
· Acting as technical authority for the assigned reactor systems and represent the Design Manager at technical and project reviews when required.

The Candidate
Candidates will hold the following skills and experience…

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer (or equivalent) with design experience including responsibility for technically leading systems design programmes.
  • Nuclear process system design experience, including responsibility for technical and project leadership in a relevant field.
  • Understanding of reactor system design, operation and safety cases, including specific domain knowledge of containment system design and operation.
  • Experience in the development of Severe Accident Management Guidelines
  • A solid understanding of the principles of nuclear safety, including knowledge of level 2 and 3 probabilistic safety assessments.
  • Experience in the interpretation of customer specifications and defining and managing engineering requirements.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant design codes, including systems engineering.
