Safety Engineer / Hazard Studies - Nuclear New Build
Bristol - not site based
£35-43k DOE plus comprehensive package

I have an incredible opportunity for a safety focused engineer with experience of complex engineering hazard studies to join the team responsible for delivering the challenging nuclear island portion of one of the largest scale engineering projects in Europe at Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

Roles & Responsibilities

As a Hazard Studies Engineer you will be responsible for conducting studies relating to internal and external hazards (such as extreme cold, internal explosion, pipework ruptures and earthquakes…) on various plant buildings in order to verify that classified equipment meets the protection requirements. .
General duties in each case would be expected to include:

De-risking Studies
From Flamanville 3 feedback and analysis of the UK modifications, the Hazard Studies Engineer will have to propose some changes/optimisation to the Layout Team in order to de-risk at an early stage, the design related to hazard protection requirements.
Verification Studies Analysis
From input data supplied by the architect engineer (list of classified equipment), by the systems engineers (description of plant main systems), and by the 3D model, the Hazard Studies Engineer will:
  • Produce studies relating to internal and external hazards for buildings
  • Produce simplified design calculation hypotheses and define the various possible scenarios for each internal or external threat situation:
    • Identify the equipment under threat and also the way in which the equipment would be affected.
    • Produce studies on the functional redundancies impacted.
  • On one dedicated hazard topic, provide contributions to the safety report and the doctrine and liaise with the client and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).

Layout changes
The Hazard Studies Engineer will:
  • Relay to the building general layout controllers the changes to be made to the general layout, highlighted by the functional analysis studies completed by the architect engineer.
  • Present the results of these studies regularly to the project teams.

The Hazard Studies Engineer will also be attached to one dedicated building, and will be the correspondent for the integration of all the hazard studies (such as internal flooding, external explosion, etc.) in the early stages of the design and with the support of referent engineer.
They will work in conjunction with the Building Group Leaders, the Nuclear Safety Team, the System Engineers, Civil Engineers and Plant Layout Engineers.

Skills & Qualifications

Whilst previous nuclear project exposure would be a distinct advantage it is not a requirement, and any transferable large scale safety critical sector experience will be considered.
We are looking for someone with the following attributes:

  • Degree qualified Engineer (preferably Mechanical or Electrical)
  • Experience in the area of hazard studies (HAZAN / HAZID / HAZOP), systems, layout engineering and pipework
  • Good knowledge of safety requirements
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Knowledge and the ability to navigate PDMS and Navisworks software

Salary & Package

In addition to a comprehensive package as outlined below, you will be joining one of EDF's key strategic partners involved in rebuilding the UK's nuclear new build skillset and gain invaluable knowledge and experience in this field at a very exciting period of growth for them.
Package details will include:

  • Pension - 8% of gross basic salary + voluntary contribution
  • Annual Leave - 25 days + Bank Holiday + 1 day per year of service up to 5 days
  • Health Insurance - Company's Private Medical Insurance Plan
  • Life Assurance - 4 times basic salary
  • Group Income Protection - Payments in case of sick/injury leave for a period of more than 13 continuous weeks
